Hello, Bonjour, and Namaste!

I’m Satnam Sekhon, a Registered Dietitian in beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Allow me to share my lived experience with food.

I immigrated to Canada at the ripe old age of 4.  Growing up, our home was a revolving door for other families also starting a new life in Canada and so quantity cooking of Indian meals was a norm in my mum’s kitchen.  My role was always limited to “cook’s helper”, largely to prep vegetables and wash dishes.

I was first introduced to non-Indian cooking in my highschool Home Ec class and loved sharing this new found talent as a “cook” to feed our family. With this renewed passion, pursuing education in Nutrition and Dietetics just seemed to be a natural fit which evolved into a fulfilling career as a Registered Dietitian.  Along with my professional role, I actively volunteered to teach healthy eating messages through health fairs and media within the South Asian community.  I’m also proud to be a co-founding member of a grassroots community group called SEYVA (Socializing and Educating Youth through Volunteer Activities).

Over time, I noticed that our new generation of South Asian youth was lacking simple cooking skills to make traditional meals while at the same time, the larger community was warming up to the flavours of Indian food but were intimidated by the long list of spices and ingredients in the recipes.

So I decided to combine my passion for cooking, teaching and volunteering to share our family’s authentic recipes in a cookbook and forward all the proceeds  to local charities.  A common saying I hear is ‘nothing’s ever easy’ and so my philosophy is to keep tasks simple because they’re inevitably going to get complicated.  This thought process resulted in simple flavour packed recipes to build one’s confidence in Indian cooking and tempt the taste buds for more in my cookbook Dhaalicious: Indian Meals From My Kitchen to Yours.

I must confess that I am not a professional culinary chef and I certainly don’t have the perfect knife skills but I also believe it’s not a prerequisite to get your creative juices going. As Julia Child once quoted – “You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces, just good food from fresh ingredients”

Be creative in the kitchen, try new ingredients, and most of all, have FUN!
